We’re all about visually storytelling these days. With all of the photo apps, smart phones, tablets, and digital cameras it is so much easier for us to just snap photos and just plop them on our websites. This is a good thing, right?
Well yes, it’s convenient, cost-effective and it basically doesn’t suck!
Here’s what DOES suck. When your website or the images on your website take f o r e v e r to load. To quote Sweet Brown (and I almost cannot believe I am quoting Sweet Brown) ‘aint nobody got time for that’.
When your readers and prospective clients come to your website and it takes two years for your images to load, guess what? They’re gone. Adios. Sayonara. Ciao.
So what to do? Optimize your images for faster load time! It’s simple and can shave off precious seconds of loading time. It’s best to compress the image before uploading it, this reduces the overall file size without losing image quality.
There are many paid and free resources out there to help compress images. If you have Photoshop you can easily select the image type and quality when saving your image.
If you don’t have access to Photoshop, not to worry! I’ve listed a few FREE resources for image optimization here AND I included a video on how to use one of them. Yay you! You’re welcome. 🙂
These resources are all web-based so you are not required to download or install any software in order to use them!
Here’s a step-by-step video on how to use Smush.It. And you can check out this post to learn how optimizing your images helps your SEO.
